Random Musings: Ultralight Helicopter?

Updated: Mar 31, 2019

It’s the new year and since the instructions for the 42057 Ultralight HelicopterTechnic set have already been released, I thought I’ll try building one using parts from 40428 Bulldozer and 42040: Fire Plane. Of course, it won’t end up exactly the same (there wouldn’t be much point to Lego if everything were the same), but that’s the beauty of Lego.

The horrible mishmash of colours

No seat or steering wheel either.

From the front it looks like something coupled out from the scrapyard. The lack of flexible outer cables made me resort to two 8M cross axles to build the cockpit. The lack of 6167281: Beam, 1 Module W/ 2 Cross Axle, 180 Deg. resulted in a 8M ‘stop axle’ being used instead a 5M ‘stop axle’.

Side View

Aesthetically, this model is a mess and you can’t alter the position of the tail fin. Coincidentally, the 12 tooth gear seen in the picture isn’t necessary and wasn’t included in either the Fire Plane or Bulldozer sets and a bush will suffice.

*For the uninitiated, the “M” indicating the length of the axle refers to module. Each module is approximately 8 mm long.

I would like to thank the Brickset team for collating such a wonderful database of Lego parts, without which this article would not have come to fruition. Images of individual Lego parts are all obtained from

Brickset.
