WRO 2019: Football

Updated: Mar 30, 2019

WRO Football aims, where possible, to reflect the game of human soccer. Teams of two on two autonomous robots chase an infra-red transmitting ball around a WRO size table top field with the aim to kick more goals than the opposition.

For newcomers to this category, this category is played based on domination of the field as well as defence against the opponent’s attacks. Over time, you will be able to master the ability to defend and attack using complicated programs and sophisticated robots. The rules remain the same, except for the following:

  1. If a team leads by 5 goals in a 5 minute half game or 10 goals in a 10 minute half game, the game will be stopped under a mercy ruling and the current scores will be recorded.

  2. If a robot is touched or removed without the referees permission, a two minute time penalty will occur.

  3. No other building materials can be used, including glue, tape, screws etc. An exception to this is the minimal use of tape to shield the IR Ball Sensor from external light sources.

  4. A maximum of three LEGO omni wheels can be used on a single robot. Use of a reciprocating kicker in the remaining EV3 output port is strongly recommended.

  5. Robots must have a handle for referees to easily pick them up. The handle will not be included in above height and weight measurements.

  6. Batteries will be limited to the grey rechargeable LEGO battery or 6 X AA 1.5 V only rated batteries. Maximum individual AA Voltage is 1.83V.

  7. Ball Capturing Zones are defined as any internal space created when a straight edge is placed on any of the protruding points of a robot that can touch the ball.

  8. Included information about WRO Guiding Principles & Ethics Code.
